"When I first watched the show I thought he was such an arrogant, self-absorbed a**hole."

Recently, we asked members of our Community to tell us the characters they used to hate, but grew to love after a rewatch – here's who they said!

"When I was younger I didn’t understand how he could turn to the dark side but decades later, I can understand making questionable decisions for love."

3. Lip Gallagher – Shameless

Showtime

"I was a young teenager when I first watched the show and I thought he was such an arrogant, self-absorbed a**hole. When I went back to the show later, I saw how much pressure he had to succeed and how people forced him into a pedestal of 'the smart one', 'the one who will get out' and he became my favourite because of how interesting he was."

5. Monica GellerFriends

Monica Geller, portrayed by Courteney Cox, stands in a kitchen looking unimpressed in this scene from the TV show Friends

NBC

"I have always struggled with being shy, messy and scatty so in the '90s, Monica was instantly the kind of person I avoided out of anxiety. I was a little bit scared of her! I was in my 20s.

Watched it again this year and she is so sweet! I am in my 50s now (still can't get the hang of a tidy home – just overwhelms me). Someone like Monica wouldn't have judged me. She'd have helped me get some routine going."

6. Sansa Stark – Game of Thrones

"I used to HATE her with a passion. But the more I rewatch Game of Thrones, the more I adore, admire and respect the growth she made. In fact, I think she’s now my favourite Stark."

8. Emily Gilmore – Gilmore Girls

The WB / The CW

"When I was younger I really hated her. I’ve recently rewatched it and what can I say – she’s my favourite character now 😄 of course she’s still problematic (who of the Gilmores isn’t – none of them knows what boundaries are) but I love her wit, and her facial expressions are the best. She also shows some development throughout the show that I really appreciate.

Kudos to Kelly Bishop for the great acting!"

9. Bree Van de Kamp – Desperate Housewives

10. Skyler White – Breaking Bad

HBO

"I've rewatched the entire series a few times over the years, and every time I like her even more. She held that family together through all of Walter's BS, even running the business towards the end, and through much of that allowed her own son to hate her because she didn't want him to hate Walter if he found out the truth. And she somehow held her shit together through all of it."

11. Steve Harrington – Stranger Things

"He was such a douche in season one but his character has shown development throughout the show."

12. Rachel Berry – Glee

Lea Michele wearing a black beret and a casual top, smiling and outdoors with blurred pedestrians in the background

Fox

"Used to find her so irritating and unlikeable but honestly, since rewatching, I’ve come to appreciate her determination and the satire of it all. After a certain point, the show stopped being such a satire but in season 1 Rachel was actually really funny and is now one of my favourite characters."

13. Theon Greyjoy – Game of Thrones

Alfie Allen, dressed in medieval armor, portrays Theon Greyjoy in a scene from "Game of Thrones," set against a rugged, coastal backdrop

HBO

"I hated him the first couple watch throughs but omg, did he grow on me! The redemption arc is absolutely amazing, as well as Alfie Allen’s acting!!"

14. Lois Wilkerson – Malcolm in the Middle

Jane Kaczmarek looks up while talking to someone wearing a striped shirt and a backpack in a scene from a TV show

Fox

"Lois was the scary parent 😂 but tbf, her eldest son did set such a harrowing example for his younger brothers. that woman must have high blood pressure from all the screaming she did. She always stressed me out, ngl."

plaid_sofas

"I can understand her now. There's one episode with her and Francis that explains why she turned out that way. It shows us Francis as a toddler and how he made her life hell. And how she figured out she had to be like this to keep her children safe."

15. Nate Heywood – Legends of Tomorrow

A man with styled hair and a serious expression wearing a dark jacket over a shirt, indoors

The CW

"TBH, I think most of my issue at the time was the fact it was a new show, and they’d not really established the revolving door crew situation. Him coming in after they’d killed my favourite character in the first season just felt like a slap in the face. On subsequent watches, while his opening season was terrible, I’ve actually come to really love him. He’s not perfect (and I’m still mad at the “to catch a predator joke' that led to some horrible misunderstandings about one of my faves) but he’s really just a big-hearted goofball, who’ll do anything for his friends."

16. On Ha Joon (Kim Dan Woo) – Taxi Driver

Ahn Bo-hyun in a scene from a TV show, wearing a casual jacket, looking serious

SBS TV

"At first I was really mad at him for betraying Do-gi and nearly selling him and his team to their deaths. But now thinking about it, not only was Do-gi's life ruined by the Bishop but Ha Joon/Dan Woo's life was destroyed too by being groomed into a weapon of revenge the Bishop could use against Do-gii. And to be honest I feel like Ha Joon outsold Baek Sung Mi, The Bishop, and other antagonists of the series."
