Springfield woman charged with DUI manslaughter after passenger dies

Police say both drivers sustained serious injuries and her one passenger has died.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A 21-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter in connection with a deadly head-on crash earlier this month in Woodbridge, Virginia. The crash claimed the life of a 23-year-old man riding passenger and left another driver seriously injured.

The crash occurred in the early hours of of Sept. 13, when Lesly Miraya-Mayuri, of Springfield, was allegedly driving her 2017 Toyota Camry the wrong way on Caton Hill Road near Killarney Drive. According to police, Miraya-Mayuri was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when her car collided with a 2015 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 67-year-old woman from Woodbridge.

Neither Miraya-Mayuri nor her passenger, identified as 23-year-old Elvis Gabriel Alvarez of Alexandria, were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Alvarez was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the collision. Both drivers also sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

Following an investigation, authorities determined that Miraya-Mayuri had been intoxicated at the time of the crash. On Sept. 25, she was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter. She is currently being held on a $10,000 unsecured bond, with a court date scheduled for Oct. 9.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, whose name has not been released, continues to recover from her injuries.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed Miraya-Mayuri's driving behavior prior to the collision to contact investigators. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
