Tax-free holidays back in Virginia, Maryland

Here's when the holidays are, and what you can buy.

MARYLAND, USA — It may be hard to believe, but the start of the school year is right around the corner. Soon there will be opportunities for you to save some money while doing that all-important back-to-school shopping. 

Here's what you need to know about upcoming sales tax holidays in Virginia and Maryland. 

Virginia

Virginia's sales tax holiday lasts three days, from Aug. 2 to Aug. 4. 

During the sales tax holiday, you can buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax.

What items are eligible?

Maryland

In Maryland, the tax-free week returns Aug 11-17.  During the week, any qualifying clothes or footwear prices at $100 or less will be exempt from the state's 6% sales tax. There is no limit to how many items should be purchased to receive this deal. The first $40 of any backpack purchase is also tax free.
