The Playmaker has signed to handle international sales for the thriller-comedy “Sew Torn,” with UTA Independent Film Group looking after North American rights.

The film will have its international premiere Saturday at the Locarno Film Festival on the Piazza Grande. The film had its world premiere at SXSW.

The feature film debut of writer-director Freddy Macdonald explores the intricate tapestry of human decision-making. It follows his critically acclaimed short film of the same title, which was acquired by Searchlight Pictures and received an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release.

The film centers on Barbara Duggen (played by Eve Connolly), a mobile seamstress, who is struggling to keep her fabric shop alive. After a botched sewing appointment sets her on a quest to replace her client’s button, she stumbles upon a drug deal gone bad. Faced with downed motorcyclists, guns, and a briefcase, Barbara is completely torn. She is forced to pick between three choices: commit the perfect crime, call the police, or drive away.

“Sew Torn” is a U.S.-Swiss production. It is produced by Fred Macdonald, Barry Navidi, Sebastian Klinger, Diamantis Zavitsanos and Socratis Zavitsanos.

Moritz Hemminger, head of sales and acquisitions at The Playmaker, said: “We are thrilled to introduce the truly unique ‘Sew Torn’ by the exceptionally talented director Freddy Macdonald to the world.”

Freddy Macdonald said: “We are thrilled to partner with The Playmaker to bring ‘Sew Torn’ to international audiences. After a great reception at SXSW, we can’t wait to premiere internationally on the Piazza Grande.”

Freddy Macdonald is represented by UTA.
