Here's what drivers need to know.
MCLEAN, Va. — Commuters in the McLean area should brace for significant delays as an overturned tractor-trailer has led to the complete closure of northbound lanes on I-495 (Beltway Inner Loop) at Georgetown Pike. The crash, which occurred early Monday morning, has left all northbound lanes blocked, forcing drivers to seek alternate routes.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the crash has resulted in injury and has led to a full shutdown of the Inner Loop travel lanes under the VA-193 overpass. The resulting traffic disruption has caused delays that are stretching back before I-66 for Inner Loop drivers. On the Outer Loop, rubbernecking delays have begun building up in Maryland before MD-190.
The Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) reports that all Inner Loop travel lanes are currently inaccessible, and motorists are urged to follow police directions and use alternative routes. VDOT is advising travelers to avoid the area if possible and seek different paths to their destinations.
Emergency crews are on the scene working to clear the wreckage and assess the situation. The exact timeline for when the lanes will be reopened remains unclear.
