2 months ago 5

The official lineup of the upcoming Venice Film Festival is being announced today at 11 a.m. CET by artistic director Alberto Barbera and Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, who is the new president of the fest’s parent organization the Venice Biennale.

As previously announced, Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” — starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe — is set as the out-of-competition opener of what is likely to be one the Lido’s most star-studded editions in recent memory.

As of last week, Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar was also eyeing a competition spot with “The Room Next Door,” his English-language feature debut starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. Other titles that Variety previously predicted could make the cut were “Joker 2” with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga; Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” a biopic of famed opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie; and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” telling a love story between Daniel Craig and “Outer Banks” breakout Drew Starkey.

This year’s international jury will be led by acclaimed French actor Isabelle Huppert, along with jurors James Gray (“Ad Astra”), Andrew Haigh (“All of Us Strangers”), Agnieszka Holland (“Green Border”), Kleber Mendonça Filho (“Bacurau”), Abderrahmane Sissako (“Bamako”), Giuseppe Tornatore (“Cinema Paradiso”), Julia von Heinz (“Treasure”) and Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha”).

Venice Film Festival’s 81st edition will run Aug. 28-Sept. 7.
