Pennsylvania's governor ordered flags to be flown at half staff in Comperatore’s honor.
WASHINGTON — The man who was killed at a rally for former President Donald Trump was identified Sunday by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who called him a hero.
Corey Comperatore was a former fire chief from the area who loved his family, Shapiro said at a press conference Sunday afternoon.
“Corey died a hero. Corey dove on his family to protect them last night,” the governor said.
The governor also ordered flags to be flown at half staff in Comperatore’s honor.
Shapiro declined to discuss the conditions of the two others hurt in the shooting.
A GoFundMe page set up by Trump's campaign has already raised more than $1 million for Comperatore and the other victims. As of Sunday afternoon, the fund had received $1.2 million in donations.
"President Donald Trump has authorized this account as a place for donations to the supporters and families wounded or killed in today’s brutal and horrific assassination attempt," the page, which was created by one of Trump's top financial advisors, read. "All donations will be directed to these proud Americans as they grieve and recover. May God bless and unite our nation."
Kid Rock, the musician, one-time political candidate and Trump supporter, donated $50,000 to the fundraiser, according to donation records. Vivek Ramaswamy, once one of Trump's opponents for the Republican nomination, donated $30,000.
The shooting took place Saturday night at a rally Trump was holding in Butler, Pennsylvania. Shortly after the rally began, a series of gunshots rang out, and Trump could be seen clutching his ear. Secret Service agents shot and killed the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, and rushed the former president off the stage.
Trump, with his face still bloody from being shot in the ear, raised his fist defiantly as he was hurried to a waiting car.
In the hours since the shooting, politicians from both sides of the aisle and around the globe condemned the political violence, with many wishing Trump a speedy recovery.
