Spain’s fast-growing Secuoya Studios has re-teamed with Cuban-North American actor-producer William Levy (“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter”) for the action romantic comedy film “Bajo un volcán,” directed by Hugo Martín Cuervo.
Shooting entirely on the Canary Island of Tenerife, “Bajo un volcán” marks a further step into the Levy-Secuoya alliance, which kicked off in 2022 with the production of ViX’s TV drama “Montecristo.”
This time, the two companies have engaged in a collaboration with Álamo Producciones Audiovisuales, the outfit led by prolific Spanish producer Eduardo Campoy, executive producer alongside Secuoya’s David Martínez and WLE’s William Levy and Jeff Goldberg.
Levy, who earned global success with Netflix’s remake of the RCN telenovela “Cafe con aroma de mujer,” toplines the film with Spanish actress Maggie Civantos (“Locked Up,” “Express”).
Further cast members include Adriana Torrebejano (“Muertos, S.L.”), Fabiola Guajardo (“Los ricos también lloran”), Elia Galera (“Zorro”), Pino Montesdeoca (“Way Down”) and Antón Lofer (“La Bandera”).
Levy plays Mario Torres, a captain and military pilot, who arrives in Tenerife after a volcanic eruption seems to have subsided. But Dani (Civantos), an expert volcanologist, fears an imminent reactivation, which leads her to a conflict with a scientific committee. Love and passion between Mario and Dani look as inevitable as any natural catastrophe.
The feature tells “a story of forbidden and ill-timed love, whose passion is framed in the midst of the eruptive activity of a volcano, in a simile of the relationship between two people as opposite and shocking as two tectonic plates in continuous friction,” reads a Secuoya Studios press release.
“Bajo un volcán” will offer “a refreshing mix of genres, a non-stop plot which will combine the story about two lovers and the inevitable countdown towards a cataclysm with unpredictable consequences,” the statement continues.
Beta Fiction Spain will distribute the film in Spanish theaters.
Secuoya Studios and Álamo Producciones hold a long-term feature film production partnership. Teaming with Adolfo Blanco’s indie production-distribution company A Contracorriente Films, they recently released Hugo Martín Cuervo’s dramatic comedy “La Bandera” and are preparing the launch on June 28 of the sci-fi movie “Invasión,” directed by David Martín-Porras.
