19 TV And Movie Deaths That Were So Unnecessary And Didn't Help The Plot At All

Why do so many of these characters have horrific deaths?

Warning: This post mentions suicide

We understand character deaths are meant to advance the plot, but sometimes they end up leaving a bad taste in audiences’ mouths. From senseless tragedies to questionable murders, some of these character deaths are forever burned in our brains.

1. In Desperate Housewives when Edie Britt was electrocuted:

Edie was an amazing antagonist on the show and although she was labeled as evil, she was arguably the most confident and different than the rest of the housewives – which felt refreshing. Dying by electrocution in the fifth season of the show, her death felt out of place and odd. It's not the first time an odd death has occurred on Housewives but her character deserved better since she was such an opposing force.

2. In Grey's Anatomy when Heather Brooks was also electrocuted and died of a brain bleed:

Brooks (aka Mousey) from Grey’s Anatomy was an intern and one of the most heartbreaking deaths on the show because her story didn’t feel finished. She was extremely talented and showed a lot of promise in neuro (RIP DEREK SHEPHERD). She was unfortunately electrocuted which made Shane, another promising intern, have a breakdown. Shane ended up leaving the show so Heather’s story felt unresolved.

3. In Lost, when Boone died after Locke lied about how he sustained his injuries:

Boone's character had so much potential and his relationship with Shannon was cut way too short. His character was used only in service to advance Locke and Shannon's arcs and not fully form into his own. If Boone lived past Season 1 he definitely would've been a fan favorite.

4. In Grey's Anatomy when Andrew DeLuca is stabbed by a human trafficker:

Deluca was a beloved character in Grey’s Anatomy and even had a heroic storyline when he stopped a human trafficker, which led to his tragic death. His death was hard on the audience since he was Meredith Grey’s love interest. He was one of the few characters on the show to be diagnosed with a mental illness and instead of diving deeper into his mental health problems, he was killed off the show.

5. In The Descent Part 2 when Sarah sacrifices herself:

Sarah's character is such a strong force in the creature feature films, The Descent and The Descent Part Two. After losing her husband and child, we follow Sarah's path as she tries to heal and move on by going on a girls' trip to explore some caves. Only one day after escaping the caves, Sarah is forced to relive the horrors she just went through and ends up paying the price to save a woman she just met. We watched her emotional journey over two movies and it felt like a letdown after she let herself become bait to the creatures.

6. In One Tree Hill when Quentin Fields was shot and killed:

Quentin’s journey abruptly ended in Season 6 when he was murdered. While his death helped Nathan’s future aspirations, his sudden passing was a shock for One Tree Hill fans who wanted to see more of his journey. He was one of the few Black characters on the show and deserved so much better!

7. In One Tree Hill when Keith Scott was also shot and killed:

Keith Scott was a strong male presence on the show. His death felt more like a "shake-up" to One Tree Hill rather than providing a meaningful storyline. If his character had lasted longer, he would've remained a fan favorite and it would've been a great storyline to see him interact with Lucas and Peyton's child and watch the One Tree Hill family expand. He was the best father figure in the show.

8. When J.T. Yorke was stabbed and killed in Degrassi:

Degrassi is an incredibly dramatic TV show with shootings, drugs, sex, predators, and crazy stalkers! This early 2000’s show had no problem traumatizing the tweens who tuned in. One of the most disturbing deaths on the show included J.T. York when he was stabbed and left to die. For The Next Generation fans, this lovable character’s death completely came out of left field, and felt like it was only done for shock value.

9. When the baby in Mother! is murdered:

Mother! is one of those movies you immediately search online after because your brain is confused by what you just watched. The baby's death scene is deeply disturbing and almost feels illegal to watch. It’s one of the few character deaths that make you feel ill, and while there’s a deeper religious meaning behind the intense scene, watching this character's death felt unnecessary in moving the plot forward.

10. In Game of Thrones when Vary's dies by dragon-fire:

Varys was an admirable character on Game of Thrones. Betrayed by Tyrion Lannister, he met his demise when he was sentenced to death and killed by dragon fire. Varys was one of the few characters on this list who died off-screen and thank goodness for that because it would’ve been too much to handle. His death felt unnecessary because he wasn’t the only one who undermined Daenerys claim to the throne, and it felt like he was immediately forgotten about.

11. Lost when Jin and Sun die together:

Jin and Sun, one of the few married couples on Lost, brought such a unique storyline to the show. Their death was heart-wrenching as they chose to spend their last moments together and leave behind their daughter — making her an orphan!

12. In Scandal when David Rosen was murdered by Cyrus Beene:

David Rosen's death was one of the hardest to watch because he was viewed as one of the few good guys who believed in justice despite all the corruption around him. His death didn't help the plot because he was the balance the show needed amongst all the murderers, liars, and corrupt politicians.

13. In Fear The Walking Dead when Nick Clark was shot and killed:

Nick's death was a huge disappointment to Fear the Walking Dead fans since he was an incredibly flawed and relatable character. His death was poorly executed in a gritty flashback. Starting the show as a drug addict, his character had so much potential as he was barely coming into his own as an independent survivor who could overcome tough hardships.

14. In World War Z when the doctor accidentally shoots himself and dies:

Probably the only comical moment in World War Z is when the doctor, Dr. Andrew Fassbach, accidentally dies by shooting himself. His character was short-lived and unnecessary to the plot since Gerry Lane, Brad Pitt's character, went on to solve the mystery of how the virus started.

15. In Bones when Lance Sweets was beaten to death:

Sweets' death was one of the hardest to stomach. He was one of the few main cast members who was murdered. His character brought a refreshing angle to the show with fans even protesting that his character should've just left instead of being murdered. While the other characters rallied together after his death, his absence was felt for the remainder of the show.

16. In Scream 5 when Dewey Riley was stabbed and killed:

With no happy ending in sight, Dewey's death felt like a punch to the gut. He deserved a dignified death and it felt more like a plot device. But after surviving several mass murders, you'd think he would've made smarter decisions than to confront Ghostface alone! We've spent over 25 years with this beloved character and then he was murdered after being distracted by a phone call?!? This murder felt personal since it was treated like just "another death."

17. In Hostel 2 when Lorna is brutally murdered:

This murder lives in my head rent-free. While the Hostel films are known for their over-the-top torture, this death scene is particularly brutal since Lorna is labeled as the sweet, timid character and dies in a horrific slaying. While some critics and audiences believe Hostel 2 is a feminist film, this death feels anti-female as innocent blood is literally spilled and her character is treated as disposable.

18. In 2012 when Gordon is crushed to death:

After surviving every natural disaster possible, Gordon Silberman, the stepdad, dies just as they reach safety. His death is out of place and is glossed over when Jackson tells his ex-wife that Gordon is dead. While Gordon didn't start out as a proactive character, he was just as willing to save his family as Jackson. In the end, his character was treated as if he was in the way of the ensuing love connection between Jackson and his ex-wife.

19. And finally, in Would You Rather when Iris' sick brother, Raleigh, dies by suicide:

After Iris survives a sick game where she's manipulated and tortured, she comes home to find her brother, Raleigh, has committed suicide. Unbeknownst to Raleigh, Iris was forcefully participating in the game to win a large sum of money to pay for his cancer treatments and their bills. Raleigh's death was shocking because Iris went through absolute hell to win the money and it was all for nothing. It was an amazing twist but felt more sickening than a satisfying ending (but I'm still all in for Would You Rather 2)!
