This is not the news I was expecting.
Sorry All American fans, Daniel Ezra is saying goodbye to the series...but not completely.
All good things must come to an end and it looks like after starring in the show for six seasons, Daniel is taking a step back. According to Variety, Daniel will not return as a series regular for All American's forthcoming seventh season, but he'll remain an "integral" part of the series by making guest appearances.
He came to this decision with showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll before Season 6 production began. Despite his departure from the series, Daniel revealed just how grateful he was for this role and the people he met along the way.
“After making the difficult decision to leave All American, my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I’ve ever played in the manner he deserves,” Daniel said in a statement.
“Thanks to Nkechi and the writers, I got my wish. Season 6 is ‘Spencer’s goodbye.’ I’ll miss him. I’ll miss our cast and crew. I hope it’s been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him.”
The 32-year-old actor also directed several episodes, including All American's 100th episode, which aired on May 27.
This surprising news comes after Monday's pivotal episode, "Victory Lap." In the episode, fans see Daniel's character, Spencer James, get drafted to the NFL. His dreams continue to come to fruition as a time jump shows him playing in the Super Bowl and getting engaged to his longtime love Olivia Baker (Samantha Logan). Way to go out with a bang!
The final episodes of Season 6 will follow "Spelivia" (Spencer and Olivia's internet ship name) planning their wedding.
To catch more of Daniel and all of his glory, before he leaves the show, be sure to watch All American on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
You can also stream earlier seasons on Netflix.
