2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Comedy Series

QUINTA BRUNSON, TYLER JAMES WILLIAMS Disney

Weekly Commentary (Updated Aug. 8, 2024): The second season of the hit FX series, which aired in June 2023, led the tally for comedy series with 23 nominations, including outstanding comedy series. This surpasses the 22-nomination Emmy record held by NBC’s “30 Rock” since 2009. Could it break its record for the most wins achieved last year with the inaugural season, which garnered 10 awards?

ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and HBO/Max’s “Hacks” are formidable contenders, each boasting incredible third seasons that stand as their best yet. It has been a decade since ABC last won this category with the fifth season of “Modern Family.” “Abbott,” a mockumentary following a group of dedicated teachers, is one of the most heartwarming shows on television. This year, it garnered key nominations it had missed in the past, such as directing for Randall Einhorn, potentially putting it within reach of its first win in this category.

As for “Hacks,” it came close to winning its first season, taking home awards for directing, writing, and lead actress for Jean Smart. With Smart likely to repeat her win and Hannah Einbinder possibly securing her first, “Hacks” could push past the finish line if voters feel inclined to recognize its excellence.

The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies will occur over two nights on Sept. 7-8. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, Sept. 15.
