The business owners say they hope to build a community around cannabis by creating a safe space to consume it.
BURTONSVILLE, Md. — It's been two weeks since Maryland's first-ever cannabis lounge opened for business and workers say things are going great.
Ceylon House, located at 4009 Sandy Spring Road, in Burtonsville was originally advertised as a safe space to consume cannabis and pass the time.
Owners Venushki “Venus” Hemachandra and Shreemal Perera, who also own the Herbiculture medical marijuana dispensary next door, said the concept was inspired by tea houses in Sri Lanka.
Ceylon House Marketing Director Connor Mosby said business offers rental and event space to cannabis customers.
“Bars have trivia, bars have different events going on, so we have puffs and paints, we have yogas in the morning,” he said.
Ceylon House is open daily from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. to anyone older than 21 and in possession of a registered Maryland medical marijuana card.
A general entry fee of $25 per person will be charged for two hours of lounge use.
Although Ceylon House does not sell marijuana on-site, guests are encouraged to bring their own supplies or to purchase from Herbiculture.
Glass and rig rentals will also be available.
Baltimore resident Jarilyn Walker said she is happy to see a business like Ceylon House open in the state.
"It's really dope because you get to vibe with like minded patients in a safe place," she said.
Discounted tickets to visit Ceylon House are available to Herbiculture dispensary customers; $15 entry (with a minimum purchase at the dispensary on the same day).
Only cannabis in its original packaging with a patient label will be allowed inside the lounge.
Anyone looking to partake in marijuana at the lounge is encouraged to plan a safe way home ahead of time. Officials say not to drive under the influence of cannabis.
