Around 11:20 a.m. on Thursday, the Metropolitan Police Department's ShotSpotter identified the sounds of gunfire in the 300 block of 37th Street Southeast.
Arriving officers found "a crime scene" in the middle of the street.
About two minutes after officers arrived at that scene, dispatchers got a call about a shooting 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast near a McDonalds. The two locations are a few blocks apart.
At that location, officers found a man and woman inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to area hospitals.
The man's injuries weren't life-threatening, the police department said.
The woman was in critical condition but later died at the hospital.
She was later identified as 22-year-old Samya Gill of Fort Washington, Maryland.
The police department said the shooting was caught on camera and it shows two men in a white four-door sedan. Both men got out of their vehicle with assault rifles and fired into the victims' vehicle.
Police say this appears to be a targeted shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to make anonymous tips by calling (202) 727-9099.
