Leaf collection season is underway in DC

Residents can find weekly leaf collection updates every Friday through DPW's online leaf tracker.

WASHINGTON — Back to Basics Week is here in the District.

Mayor Muriel Bowser and the DC Department of Public Work launched the 2024-2025 Leaf Collection season on Monday. This year's program will run similar to last year's. Residents will receive weekly updates online about crew locations.

Residents can find weekly leaf collection updates every Friday through DPW's online leaf tracker at dpw.dc.gov/leaf or by calling the DPW Leaf Line at (202) 671-LEAF (5323). The tracker will be updated every Friday with more precise information on scheduled collection.

“DPW’s leaf collection program is one of many ways we work together as a community to keep our streets and neighbors safe throughout the fall and winter,” said Mayor Bowser.

Teams will hand out door hangers to alert residents when they're within two weeks of collection day. To prepare, homeowners should rake their leaves to the curb or into a tree box in front of their house the weekend before their scheduled collection week.

Residents should avoid parking along the street on collection day to make leaf collection easier for crews. Collection will happen twice in each neighborhood who receives DPW trash and recycling services.

As we enter into the holiday season, D.C. residents are also encouraged to help reduce food waste. Instead of throwing away your pumpkins, take them to one of the following Food Waste Drop-Off sites where the can be made into compost.
