— DC Police Department (@DCPoliceDept) September 1, 2024Preliminary police findings indicate there was a driver inside the vehicle who was "unresponsive."
Officers stated they observed a "gun on the driver's lap" and, subsequently, called for additional personnel to respond jointly to the scene.
MPD declared the suspect moved inside the vehicle, and it was then when police gave him verbal commands "to drop the weapon."
Minutes later, authorities clarified the suspect attempted to grab an officer's service weapon, and that action fostered two officers striking their weapons and hitting the suspect.
"This is yet another reminder of the daily dangers that our officers face protecting the residents and the visitors across the District of Columbia," said MPD Chief Smith.
As the community was alerted about this event, police, supported by DC Fire and Ems on the location, said the male adult was later pronounced dead.
MPD Chief Smith elucidated that no officers were injured in this incident.
As the investigation unfolds, WUSA9 learned the suspect's weapon was recovered on the spot, and authorities are working to identify the male suspect.
Agents from MPD's Internal Affairs Division in cooperation with the Criminal Investigation Division are conducting an investigation.
It is worth mentioning that this case will also be independently analyzed and reviewed by the United States Attorney's Office.
