Who will be the next Prince George’s County Executive?

Alsobrooks' win now raises a new matter. Who will be the next Prince George's County Executive? Well, it depends when Alsobrooks submits her resignation.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — After winning Tuesday night, Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks will head to Capitol Hill in January where she will be sworn-in as the junior senator from Maryland.

“So to the people of Maryland, thank you so very much,” said Alsobrooks during her election-night watch party.

Alsobrooks will replace Sen. Ben Cardin, 81, who announced last year he would not seek reelection. The Prince George’s County Executive successfully eclipsed former Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan who, through the majority of the campaign season, significantly lagged behind Alsobrooks in polls.

The win also marks another historic moment for Maryland. Alsobrooks will be the first African American woman to serve as a senator from the Free State.

“It’s remarkable to think that in two years, America will celebrate its 250 birthday. In all those years, more than 2,000 people have served in the U.S. Senate and only three have looked like me,” said Alsobrooks to a packed ballroom.

For Alsobrooks and her soon-to-be Democratic colleagues in the senate, the new term could dash any hopes for their agenda. The Associated Press projects Republicans have gained enough seats to control the chamber, a flip from Democratic control.  That means hopes for Democrats to codify abortion rights nationwide, address the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and other key issues could grind to a halt as Republicans purse their agenda.

But Alsobrooks' win now raises a new matter. Who will replace Alsobrooks as Prince George's County Executive? Well, it depends when Alsobrooks submits her resignation. If Alsobrooks submits her resignation before the end the year, county ordinances show the decision would be determined by a special election.

But if Alsobrooks submits her resignation next year, a replacement would be appointed.

WUSA 9 reached out to Alsobrooks for comment but did not hear back.
